Ealry life and career

modifier

Sterenn graduated in History of Art, in History of Photography and in Techniques of Photography, from Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, England. Before that, she was awarded A-Levels in Sociology, French Avant-Garde Films and in History of Art from D’Overbroeck’s College Oxford in England.

She is graduated in the History of Modern Design at Sotheby’s Institute in London, and did Business Studies (with Starting and Growing a New Venture) at Solvay Business School in Belgium.

Being in the second generation of a family with a passion for the arts, Sterenn Denys started selling works of art at the age of 17 years at TEFAF Maastricht with her father and his art gallery, Philippe Denys, art dealer in 20th Century Art.

This extraordinary education early infused in her a unique eye for beauty, a precise research for the rare and a exigence of high quality crafted works of art.

Historical design, a new view on works of art from the 20th century

modifier

The art dealer and international specialist in 20 th century European decorative arts, Philippe Denys, sadly and unfortunately died on the 9 th July 2010.

In Belgium and beyond its frontiers, the visionary spirit of Philippe Denys in the realm of European 20th century Arts made its impression on minds. His presence during the greatest international fairs such as TEFAF, in which he had been one of the major actors, marked them with discoveries, with his erudition, and above all with his unlimited passion which he wished to convey. Many are those who, thanks to his advice, came to have the desire to undertake collecting.

Philippe Denys lived in Brussels, developed his gallery on the Place du Grand Sablon, and was able to export all over the world Belgian eclectic taste and the reputations of Belgium’s international dealers. In total, no less than 600 auction lots were dispersed on the 15 th December 2010. The diversity of the articles offered : glassware, ceramics, silverware, everyday objects, furniture, lights - not only French, Italian, Brazilian, American, and English, but above all Scandinavian pieces. This historic collection testified to unfailing erudition and ceaseless curiosity, put without pause at the service of the Beautiful and the Rare. “I seek to discover, to be astonished and to astonish, right across the creations of this century, […] I seek also to create surprise by the discovery of objects of great quality that are little, or not yet known.” (Philippe Denys) As an “enlightener”, Philippe Denys was to start, in the middle 1980’s, as the promoter of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, presenting in his gallery the works, then little known, of Josef Hoffmann, Wolfers, Van de Velde, Serrurier Bovy, Georg Jensen and Puiforcat.

With the same avant-garde spirit, he took an interest, in the 1990’s, in more recent creations of Northern Europe.

In just a few years, he became the world specialist in Scandinavian Design. He rediscovered “Nordic Functionalism”, which cultivated the link between form and materials that was the leitmotiv of the great Scandinavian designers, such as Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner, Poul Kjaerholm, and Fabricius and Kastholm, whose talents he was one of the first to defend and affirm, by exhibiting their creations all across the world, on the stand of the Brussels Gallery present in the great international fairs of London (Design Art), of Miami (Design Miami), of Bâle (Design Miami Basel), of Paris (Biennale des Antiquaires), of New York (International Fine Art and Art Dealers Show), and of course of Maastricht (TEFAF), where he created, in 2009, the “Design Section” —one of his final achievements, supporting the international promotion of Design.

Art Career

modifier

Sterenn is very experienced in working successfully with experts, art collectors, auction houses and museum directors. Hunting and buying art for clients’ long desired objects is the key joy of Sterenn’s business for more than twenty-five years.

Art historian, Collector, Advisor and Dealer

modifier

In 2000, Sterenn created and directed the Photography Department of the family business. Due to her father’s health issues, she took over the management of the gallery.

At that time, she introduced the first time show of Fine Art Photography at TEFAF Maastricht.

From 2000 to 2005, Sterenn was an art dealer participating with the family gallery at international art fairs to sell Modern Photography at the following international art fairs:

In 2006, Sterenn Denys became the founder of the Department of Modern and Contemporary Photography at Pierre Bergé Auction House in Paris, Brussels and Geneva. She organized the first Art Photography auction in Brussels.

2010 : Pierre Bergé & Associés - Philippe Denys - Le design historique, un nouveau regard sur les objets d'art du XXe siècle. Sterenn was the art consultant for this major international auction sale. Her work included the selection of more than five hundred works of art, writing historical labelling, the compiling and layout of the catalogue and planning the interior design for the exhibition. Low estimate for this sale : 1.1 million Euros. Auction result : 2.2 million Euros.

2008-2012 : Representative of sales for Dominique Lévy & Robert Mnuchin (selling Post-War and Contemporary Art); Wienerroither & Kohlbacher (selling Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele).

Her activity included again her passion and challenge for sourcing and selecting works of art that are the most rare and important historically. She is also a precise researcher and expert in datation and the best valuation for record tracking sales. Because Sterenn Denys loves to highlight a homogenous ensemble, she is keen in making the compiling and layout of the catalogues, and the architectural plan for exhibition displays.

On the strength of her understanding and beliefs in the value of the fields she provides services and record tracking sales, Sterenn Denys is herself a collector.

Sterenn Denys present INNOVATIVE DESIGN SIGNATURE FURNITURE by established names such as George Nakashima, Poul Kjaerholm, José Zanine Caldas, Dupré-Lafont, Jules Wabbes, and Finn Juhl.

Sterenn also take seriously the importance of living with ELEGANT OBJECTS, such as in wood or glass by Tapio Wrikkala, among others, and in silver by Franco Albini, Henning Koppel and Puiforcat.

Sterenn highlight JOIE DE VIVRE PHOTOGRAPHY with modern and contemporary masters such as Man Ray, Herb Ritts, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Annie Leibovitz.

Sterenn Denys extensive connections recently enabled her to represent clients in private sales handling masterpieces by the Wiener Werkstätte coming from the Palais de Stoclet.

She has helped a Chinese client who created a multifunctional urban space in the center of Beijing, which incorporates a school, art museum, park, hotel, office space, and a nursery of creativity : she was chosen as the curator to select photographs reflecting Zen philosophy.

At the same time as being an historian of Photography, Sterenn is also herself a practising Fine Art photographer and plastician artist ; her knowledge, understanding, and activity in the field are not only theoretical and historical, but also applied and creative. Her creativity nourishes her keen eye and exigence for beauty and the innovation in art. This activity also brings her to keep constantly updated with the new creations showned in international exhibitions and art fairs.

As an artist, Sterenn Denys creates works with her sensibility, knowledge and understanding of art work. Her creativity nourishes her keen eye and demand for beauty and innovation in art. She tells stories in which people and culture meet, feeling art to be, like love, the most beautiful human creation in history.

Sterenn Denys has made culture one of her favorite themes. Her niche : exploring space as a cultural perception. This is generated through four major themes : Scenes, Spaces, Objects and Portraits.

There are two major axes to her work : spontaneous shots and crafted unique images. In order to produce the crafted work, like in painting, Sterenn add different media and colours on top of her prints. These added media can also include the brilliance of semi-precious stones inserted into the print, the whole lit by a light box.

Works of hers have been acquired and are exhibited permanently in the collections of Kettles Yard, Cambridge, the Musée d’Ixelles, Brussels, the Royal Photographic Society, Bath, and Musée de L’Elysée de la Photographie, Lausanne.

Sterenn Denys is passionate about art, both as an art historian, collector, advisor and dealer, and as herself a photographic and plastician artist.
