The gallery Yves Gastou is specialized in decorative arts, particularly furnitures and sculpture of 1940 to 1970, and contemporary design. It is located at 12, rue Bonaparte, in the 6th arrondissement of Paris.
Presentation
modifierThe gallery was created by Yves Gastou in December 1985, at the location of the former Galerie MAI[1]. It was inaugurated by the exposition Ettore Sottsass, mobilier de 1947 à 1985, a retrospective tribute to the Italian designer, who also designed the architecture of the gallery in black and white terrazzo. In 1986, the exposition On Off in Paris reunites the works of Ron Arad and the eponymous english group, followed by a show about the japanese designer Shiro Kuramata, œuvres rétrospectives et premières éditions.
In 1988, the gallery stages two exhibitions : André Dubreuil, œuvres classiques - œuvres nouvelles[2] and Danny Lane, œuvres de verre[3]. In 1989, Tom Dixon introduces his own version of the "new British design" and Shiro Kuramata presents Miss Blanche et autres pièces[4].
The 1990' are marked by the rediscovery of the creators of style 1940 that the gallery exposes successively : Gilbert Poillerat, R. Delamarre, André Arbus, Maxime Old.
Since 1996, the gallery is attending the Biennale des antiquaires[5].
The 2000's illustrate a new interest for contemporary designers. The French creator Guillaume Bardet[6] exposes his "still furniture" at the gallery in 2003, followed by his "invisible furniture" in 2008, in collaboration with Perimeter Editions. In 2005, Yves Gastou organizes three expositions about sculptor's furnitures : Philippe Hiquily, Robert Couturier and Ado Chale. The works of Jean-Claude Farhi were exposed the year after. In 2007, the gallery exhibits Zaha Hadid's works at the PAD fair PAD.
Yves's son, Victor Gastou, becomes his associate in 2008. They both display the furnitures designed by Carlo Scarpa for the Casa Pellizari[7] at the Biennale des antiquaires' 24e édition.
In 2009, in collaboration with the Edizioni Galleria Colombari, the works of Karim Rashid are presented at the gallery.
L'Ultime collection of Ettore Sottsass, an exhibition which outlines the artist's new definition of the great florentine tradition, takes place in 2011, four years after his decease, and coincide with the publication of Yves Gastou, antiquaire du futur by Delphine Antoine, at the Éditions Norma[8].
In 2014, the gallery presents the sculptures and furnitures of the artist Gerard Kuijpers[9], a collection entitled "Dancing Stones" [10], and celebrates the 50th anniversary of Ado Chale's creations[11].
