Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) est un romancier, dramaturge et scénariste britannique dont les œuvres ont été adaptées à l'écran à de nombreuses reprises.

Adaptations britanniques modifier

Ses œuvres ont été adaptées à l'écran muet dès 1916 et ont continué à l'être par des cinéastes britanniques jusque dans les années 1940. Anglo-Amalgamated a ensuite sorti une série distincte de 47 films intitulée Edgar Wallace Mysteries, qui a duré de 1960 à 1965.

Les films policiers produits par la société allemande Rialto Film entre 1959 et 1972 constituent leur propre sous-genre, connu sous le nom de « Krimi » (abréviation du terme allemand « Kriminalfilm » ou « Kriminalroman »). Outre les productions de Rialto, d'autres adaptations d'Edgar Wallace dans un style similaire ont été réalisées par les Allemands Artur Brauner et Kurt Ulrich ainsi que par le producteur britannique Harry Alan Towers.
