Edward Ingram Watkin, né le et mort en 1981[1], est un écrivain et philosophe anglais.
Biographie modifier
E. I. Watkin étudie à la St Paul's School de Londres puis au New College d'Oxford[2]. En 1908, Watkin se convertit au catholicisme[2]. En 1916, il s'oppose publiquement à la conscription, position qu'il réitère dans son ouvrage de 1939 The Crime of Conscription.
En 1927, Watkin fait la connaissance du fameux prêtre italien exilé par Mussolini, Don Luigi Sturzo, fondateur du parti populaire italien. Ils tissent des liens d'amitié et Watkin le fera publier plus tard dans la Dublin Review[3]. Il fonde en 1936 avec Eric Gill et Donald Attwater le mouvement pacifiste catholique de l'entre-deux-guerres Pax[4]. Ce mouvement a reçu le soutien de diverses personnalités chrétiennes plutôt classées à gauche, comme Dorothy Day[5].
Watkin s'oppose d'emblée au fascisme, et son livre The Catholic Centre comprend une critique de l'Italie fasciste et du Troisième Reich dont il conçoit « la révolte sociale comme étant une atteinte à la raison »[6].
Famille modifier
Son grand-père maternel est le journaliste et politicien libéral Herbert Ingram (1811-1860); Edward Watkin (1819-1901), député et patron du chemin de fer britannique, était son grand-oncle du côté de son père[7].
