Projet:Aide et accueil/English summary

The Projet:Aide et accueil (Help and welcome project) works on several ideas in order to improve the new users experience.

Last update: March 2018

New welcome message modifier

This message, posted by a bot, is a personal message signed by a volunteer, who is available to answer any question from the beginner. This message starts with " Hello and welcome. I'm Username and I can help you if needed. Please contact me if needed." That sentence is a key: it creates an human interaction between a newcomer and an experienced user.

This message now active, distributed every half-hours by a bot (volunteer’s signature is picked from a list), and also by the vadalism-fighter bot and volunteers. Volunteers to reply are picked from a list and handle 3-6 requests a week.

Information campaign for IPs modifier

Designed to be on the site notice, this campaign is designed in order to inform people about Wikipedia : how it works, how to contribute, what are the different rules… This campaign is displayed on the anonnotice during summer 2013.

Windrose project : the new index for Help pages modifier

The boussole project (windrose) is a new help page index, designed in order to make easier the research of information on Help pages. The new Help landing page is launched on November 2, 2012

Newbies’ forum modifier

We have created a special page where newbies can post their questions. Globally, an answer is made in less than 5 minutes. Newbies have a direct link to this forum on the welcome message. The "Forum des nouveaux" uses Flow, because it it easier to use for newbies.

That forum also exists for proofreading, as a support for the Article wizard.

New warning messages modifier

We are refreshing a select of warning messages in order to make them more personnal, warmer and to make easier the contact with the contributor who send the message. By this way, we increase our chances to help new users.

Tutoring project modifier

Before, new users wait for a tutor. In August 2012, we have redesigned the tutoring system, by recycling the Third Age Online project. New users can choose a tutor in a list and eaisly send him a message about tutoring. The tutoring system has bene progressivly unused due to the direct connexion created by the Welcome message.

WikiPermanences modifier

The WikiPermanences are IRL workshops. Regularly, we meet people in order to answer their questions and help them to contribute. Some WikiPermanences has been held in Paris, Rennes, Rouen, Strasbourg, Grenoble...

Article Feedback Tool modifier

A workshop works on the evaluation of the pertinence of the AFT on French Wikipedia. (dismanteled since, by a WMF decision)

Help pages rewriting modifier

A major rewrite operation of the help pages is under way: each page is separated : the basics for beginners, simplified, illustrated and major informations are highlighted, and a subpage for advanced users.

Article wizard modifier

A step by step process exists to create an article.

At the end, the newcomer is proposed to use its personal sandbox, in which an help banner is displayed.

That banner, with the 6 key points to take care of when writing, give access to direct publishing or offers assistance through a dedicated help desk using Flow, to receive some advice.

As of March 2018, that proofreading forum is still an ongoing experimentation: volunteer try to understand the blocking points from newcomers when they want to create a new article.

Welcome to Wikipédia booklet modifier

Translated and adapted to French Wikipedia usages, this booklet helps new contributors in their first steps on Wikipedia. It is updated regulary, it integrates all new features made by the Aide et accueil project.

The WikiMOOC modifier

The WikiMOOC is an on-line class for newcomers. First edition has been done in 2016, and has been resumed again in 2017 and 2018. Videos have been included to Help pages since.

Landing page modifier

A New Starting page has been developped for newcomers in 2014. While it is not possible to know which process is preferred by newcomers, a new launch page has been design with 3 paths (as of March 2018):

  • Be guided in forst steps, by watching videos and practicing tutorials from the WikiMOOC
  • Understand how Wikipedia worksby reading a plain page with key points
  • Work immediatly, by being directed to pages where you can do something, including What to do on Wikipedia?.

Those pages are regularly updated, according to pages views. In any wase, a link to the Forum des nouveaux is always provided.

What to do on Wikipedia? modifier

In July 2017, the What to do on Wikipedia? page (Aide:Que faire sur Wikipédia ?) has been redesigned to show tasks newcomers can handle. Those tasks are linked to maintenance catégories and graded by level of difficulty.
