Jeremy Daniel Quastel (né en 1963) est un mathématicien canadien spécialisé dans la théorie des probabilités, les processus stochastiques et les équations aux dérivées partielles. Il est actuellement chef du département de mathématiques de l'université de Toronto[1]. Il a grandi à Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique, et vit maintenant à Toronto, en Ontario.
Formation et carrière modifier
Quastel étudie à l'université McGill puis obtient son doctorat au Courant Institute de l'université de New York en 1990, sous la direction de Srinivasa Varadhan avec une thèse intitulée « Diffusion of Colour in the Simple Exclusion Process »[2]. Il est étudiant postdoctoral à l'Institut de recherche en sciences mathématiques de Berkeley, puis membre du corps professoral de l'université de Californie à Davis pendant les six prochaines années[3] ; il est revenu au Canada en 1998[4].
Recherches modifier
Jeremy Quastel est reconnu comme l'un des meilleurs probabilistes au monde dans les domaines de la théorie hydrodynamique, des équations aux dérivées partielles stochastiques et de la probabilité intégrable[3]. En particulier, ses recherches portent sur le comportement à grande échelle des systèmes de particules en interaction et des équations aux dérivées partielles stochastiques[4]. Il a notamment trouvé la première solution exacte de l'équation KPZ (Kardar-Parisi-Zhang).
