Into the Woods est une comédie musicale de Stephen Sondheim et James Lapine. La première a lieu à San Diego, au Old Globe Theatre, le 4 décembre 1986. Elle débute à Broadway le 5 novembre 1987. Into the Woods a remporté plusieurs Tony Awards, dont celui de la meilleure partition originale, du meilleur livret et de la meilleure actrice dans une comédie musicale (Joanna Gleason), dans une année dominée par Le Fantôme de l'Opéra.

La comédie musicale a été produite à plusieurs reprises, avec une tournée américaine en 1988, une production dans le West End, en 1990, une production télévisée en 1991, un concert anniversaire en 1997, une reprise à Broadway en 2002, une reprise à Londres en 2010 et en 2014 en adaptation au cinéma dans le film Into the Woods.

La comédie musicale entrelace les histoires de plusieurs contes de fées des frères Grimm. Les personnages principaux sont tirés du Petit Chaperon rouge, de Jack et le Haricot magique, Raiponce, et Cendrillon. Tous ces personnages sont liés ensemble dans une histoire originale impliquant un boulanger sans enfants, sa femme et leur désir de vouloir fonder une famille et une sorcière qui a jeté un sort sur eux. Pour annuler le sort, le boulanger et sa femme vont devoir rapporter plusieurs objets à la sorcière (une vache blanche, une cape rouge…). Pendant leur périple, ils rencontreront divers personnage féérique comme Cendrillon ou le petit chaperon rouge.
