ere we wereequipped with specially built buffers of wood twofeet wide. As there was nothing for us to tie up to wemerely dropped anchor there while the Daffodil keptus against the mole with its nose against the oppo-site side of our ship. In the fairly heavy sea twoof our three gangways were smashed, but the thirdheld, and 500 men swarmed up this on to the mole.This gangway was two feet wide and thirty feetlong. The men who went up it included 300 marinesand 150 storming seamen from the Vindictive, andfifty or so from the Daffodil. They swarmed up thesteel gangway carrying hand grenades and Lewisguns. No Germans succeeded in approaching thegangway, but a hard hand to hand fight took placeabout 200 yards up the mole toward the shore. The Vindictives bow was pointed toward theshore, so the bridge got the full effect of enemy firefrom the shore batteries. One shell exploded againstthe pilot house, killing nearly all of its occupants.Another burst in the fighting top, killing a lieutenant
