Seriousness of the historian

modifier

As an Englishman astray in the History of Brussels, my initial reaction to the respect given his work by Belgians was incredulity: no serious historian could approach his field, as his tactics seemed worthy of the worst Danniken-type New Age esotericists, as reflected in the original meme. However, by dint of answering the huge number of questions he left open in the worst traditions of the conspiracy theorists, I have come to understand that he was approaching something serious, from which other more recognised historians such as Guillaume Desmarez had also shied away. Not being a recognised historian, I have no career investment to lose in addressing the questions, and will do so over the next four to five years. Unfortunately that will make my work thoroughly in breach of the OR/NPOV constraints, and thus I must stop there, with the simple comment that he wasn't as barking mad as at first meets the eye. In some matters he is wrong, but in many he picks up on items of common-day mediaeval belief which were painted out of the record by the Enlightenment and 19th Century Romantic movements.

The article doesn't state Paul de Saint-Hilaire made publications in peer-reviewed journal or devised theories approved by other historians. Sources (see below) show a great interest for esoterism from this person.
