modifierThe season introduces DiMeo Crime Family Capo Tony Soprano and his family, as well as his troubled relationship with his mother Livia. Also troubled is his relationship with his Uncle Junior, who becomes locked in a power struggle with Tony after the death of the Crime Family Boss, Jackie Aprile. Tony also begins therapy sessions with Dr. Jennifer Melfi after his panic attacks become more frequent. Meanwhile, Tony's daughter Meadow becomes aware of her father's true profession while preparing to get into college, and Tony's nephew Christopher attempts to write a screenplay about his crime life and anxiously awaits becoming a made man. Due to Junior's plotting of an assassination, Tony also gets embroiled in a plot against childhood friend Artie Bucco, a charming but obsequious restaurateur.

Season 2

modifierThe story of the season focuses on Tony's growing mistrust of one of his closest friends Big Pussy Bonpensiero, who is revealed to be an FBI informant. Dr. Melfi continues meeting with Tony despite her growing disgust of his actions and contemplates the nature of their relationship. Tony's sister Janice also returns to New Jersey, and their collectively strained relationship with their mother Livia and each other continues. Meadow is accepted into college, but her personal life intersects with Tony's crime life for the first time. Former boss Jackie Aprile's brother Richie is released from prison and causes trouble for Tony and his business.

Season 3

modifierThe story of season three focuses on the relationship between Tony and his children — his oldest child, Meadow, as she begins her first year at Columbia University, while his youngest A.J. is still having problems in high school. Tony's relationship with his volatile mother, Livia, finally seeks a resolution. Dr. Melfi experiences a horrifying personal trauma, but begins to make real progress in discovering the root causes of Tony's panic attacks. Christopher learns what it takes to really be a "Made Man", and Tony's extramarital affair with one of Dr. Melfi's very mentally ill patient, Gloria.

Season 4

modifierThe story of season four focuses on the marriage between Tony and Carmela, as Tony engages in an affair with his uncle's nurse Svetlana and Carmela finds herself infatuated with one of Tony's soldiers, Furio Giunta. The increasing tension between Tony and Ralph Cifaretto comes to a violent head and Uncle Junior is put on trial for his crimes. Adriana is forced into becoming an FBI informant, while Christopher plunges deeper into heroin addiction.

Season 5

modifierThe story of season five focuses on the return of two prominent members of the DiMeo family, Tony Blundetto and Feech La Manna, who are released from lengthy stays in prison and struggle to reintegrate themselves back within the family and the life of crime. Several prominent members of the Lupertazzi family also return from prison, and the subsequent power vacuum creates a growing rift between the New York and New Jersey crime families. Tony and Carmela adjust to their new lives and each other following their separation, which greatly affects their son, A.J. Uncle Junior's health continues to deteriorate, and Adriana's guilt over her role as an FBI informant grows. Christopher struggles with his newfound sobriety.

Season 6
