Bonas Macfarlane

Bonas Macfarlane is an education support provider based in London. The company offers a variety of education related services including tuition, mentoring, school placement and university applications.

Private tuition has historically been the central pillar of the Bonas MacFarlane offering. Some 300 tutors work with children of all ages to prepare them for ‘the major hurdles of school and university entrance.’[1] They are also on hand to provide general academic support or mentoring. Tutoring either takes place face-to-face in the home or online via a proprietary platform that supports all of Bonas MacFarlane’s teaching.

Parents are laudatory of the standard of services provided – ‘BM plans tutorials with meticulous detail, yet lets the child dictate the pace. It’s a delicate balance but one they get just right’ [2]– as one would expect for tutors who are billed out at upwards of £75 / hour.

The desirability of a British education in the international community has seen Bonas MacFarlane develop a school placement arm, assisting both UK-based and overseas clients in the search for the ideal school for their children. Co-founder Charles Bonas attributes this trend to the importance of being able to communicate perfectly in English and to the fact that ‘the education is deemed well-rounded - teaching children how to think critically and take risks.’[3]

With some 25 years’ experience, Bonas MacFarlane is a uniquely long-term player in a market that has seen significant growth in recent years. New entrants tend to focus on the more commoditised, online marketplace models which are contributing to the ongoing uptick in the value of the sector. [4]

The company is led by a team of three directors, including the deeply respected tutoring expert Charles Bonas. Cited alongside Margaret Thatcher in the acknowledgements to ‘The Super Tutor: The best education money can buy in seven short chapters’ by Joe Norman, he commenced his tutoring career after an Oxford degree in 1992. Fellow director David Wellesley Wesley founded the Independent Schools Show in 2007. His experience has enabled the company to build up relationships with hundreds of schools across the UK.[5]
