Le film commence le 11 Juillet 1879 à Lincoln County, New Mexico. Un groupe d'hommes qui travaillent pour Major Harper, dirigé par flingueur Minniger, tentent d'arrêter Alexander Kain et son partenaire anglais Jameson. Ils sont arrêtés par William Bonney, aussi connu sous le nom de Billy the Kid, qui leur tire dessus et les blesse.
Jameson propose à Billy un emploi sur le ranch. Un groupe d'hommes ivres de Harper attaquent le ranch et tuent Jameson. Billy va sur un saccage de meurtre, encouragé par le manipulateur Kain, qui dénonce publiquement les efforts de Billy. Le Gouverneur Lew Wallace propose un pardon à Billy, qu'il refuse. Pat Garrett est envoyé pour attraper Billy.

Notes de Production
Le film fictionalize des événements reels de la guerre du comté de Lincoln, mais suit les faits de base. Jameson (Shepperd Strudwick) est basée sur John Tunstall et Alexander Kain (Albert Dekker) sur Alexander McSween.
Murphy a décroché son role après sa performance dans Bad Boy lorsqu'il il a joué un jeune délinquant (ou Billy the Kid était dépeint comme le délinquance juvénile du 19ème siècle.)

The film starts 11 July 1879 in Lincoln County, New Mexico Territory. A group of men who work for Major Harper, led by gunslinger Minniger, attempt to arrest rancher Alexander Kain and his English partner Jameson. They are stopped by William Bonney, aka Billy the Kid, who shoots and injuries them.
Jameson offers Billy a job as a ranch hand. A drunken group of Harper's men attack the ranch and kill Jameson. Billy goes on a killing rampage, encouraged by the manipulative Kain, who publicly decries Billy's efforts. Governor Lew Wallace offers Billy a pardon which he turns down. Pat Garrett is sent to catch Billy.

The film fictionalises the true events of the Lincoln County War but follows the basic facts. Jameson (Shepperd Strudwick) is based on John Tunstall and Alexander Kain (Albert Dekker) on Alexander McSween.
Murphy was cast after his performance as a juvenile delinquent in Bad Boy, with Billy the Kid being depicted as a 19th-century juvenile delinquent. J. Edgar Hooveroffered to narrate the film.[2]
