| Description |
English: Pottery rim sherd made of gabbroic clay that weathers over the gabbro outcrop on the Lizard in Cornwall. There are horizontal grooves parallel to the rim edge covering the entire exterior of the sherd. The rim is slightly everted and narrows to an apex making the profile of the sherd almost semi-circular. The fabric has inclusions of pale felspars and possibly dark augite and is mid brown throughout.
This type of decoration is seen on Grooved Ware vessels, dating from c.2900-2400 BC. Anna Brindley in Cleal & MacSween (1999) illustrates similarly decorated Grooved Ware vessels from Durrington Walls in Wiltshire, on page 141, Fig.14.3, Nos.8, 11 & 12. |
