ave made this town their home,at any rate for a time, amongst whom must bementioned Churchill the satirist, who came tothe town in 1764 to be near his friend Wilkes thepolitician, but did not make a long stay, sincehe caught a fever and succumbed to it. ThomasCampbell, on whose house in the Rue St. Jean,in the Haute Ville, a plaque may be seen : Iciest mort Thomas Campbell, auteur des Plaisirsde IEsperance, 15 Juin i844. He was buriedin Westminster Abbey. Perhaps the most world-renowned man whovisited the town and spent some time in it wasCharles Dickens. He passed three summersthere, 1853, 1854, 1856 ; and in 1854, in HouseholdWords, speaks of Our French Watering Place. Another Enghsh novelist, of equal if not greaterfame, Thackeray, lived with his family in avery melancholy but good chateau on the Parisroad, as he himself phrases it.
