Thatis what I think of that treaty! he exclaimed withflashing eyes, glaring around in the faces of thestartled spectators, as he and his brother chiefs sul-lenly stalked out of the place. General Wiley Thompson was the Indian agent.He was soon convinced that the Indians had no in-tention of migrating, and he called the leadingSeminoles together in October, 1834. He wastedno words, but notified the malcontents that theirremoval had been determined upon and would beenforced. The reply of the Indians to this was tobegin laying in stores of ammunition and preparingfor the struggle. This appeal was so forcibly worded that it dividedthe Indians, and a considerable number gave theirconsent to the removal. Osceola, however, was asdefiant as ever. What particularly enraged him wasthat several of the chiefs who had promised to standby him were won over. He could hardly restrainhimself from attacking them in the presence of theagent, and, turning upon the latter, he charged himto his face with taking an unfair advantage of hispeople. By this time General Thompson was alsoangry, and he told Osceola that he was a treacher-ous dog who was misleading his people, and wastheir worst enemy instead of being the friend hepretended.
