The plaster has been purposely broken at the face and hand ofthe last-mentioned figure, and in several other places there aresmall dents or hollows made by a pointed instrument, such as aspear or arrow. Traces of another design have been found on the wall of thesame transept where it joins the south wall of the aisle ; the subjecthas not been made out, but the lines appear to represent four pillarsplaced close together and having wreaths rolled spirally round them.This suggests one of those architectural compositions often used toframe or enclose a figure, but the wall space available is hardlysufficient for a figure and four other pillars beyond it. Anyone wishing to examine these mural paintings should do sowithout much delay, as the green algse removed from the walls arebeginning to grow over them again. 150 ROYAL SOCIETY OF ANTIQUARIES OF IRELAND Clare Island retain their colouring, and have been recentlydescribed.1 It is therefore fortunate that the Holy Cross figures retain aportion of the colouring, which evidently at one time covered theentire design. The colours which survive are red, red-brown, andbuff or flesh colour. Red appears on the edge of the hood worn bythe attendant, on the rings or straps round the horn blown by thesame figure, and on the rope by which the dog is held. Brown isseen on the stag, on the acorns, and on the doublet of the hornblower. The latter figure also shows traces of colour on the faceand hands, and probably had hose of a yellowish colour, thoughthis is now uncertain owing to the staining of the plaster. The onlytrace of colour on the other figures is pale buff on the cap of the firstarcher ; this may possibly be a last trace of brown similar to that onthe stag, but it is more probable that the cap was always lighter incolour.
