Interflug was the national airline of the GDR - Airbus managed to sale three examples to the carrier of East Germany. One major motive to buy the airliner was the - bizarre - fact that the Ilyushin 62 lacked the range of flying to Cuba non-stop. Some passengers - or rather, refugees (Republikflüchtlinge in German), took the opportunity and escaped to the free world - while the Ilyushins were refueled in Gander, Canada...In other words - a western-built airliner was supposed to prevent more successful escapes from the socialist dictatorship...
It is also a paradoxical fact that all three Airbus A310s operated by Interflug, like D-AOAA above, entered service with Luftwaffe one year after Germany's reunification...
