se of the boat does not concern you; it isyour duty simply to see that the sail is kept full. This canbe seen by watching the sail along the mast, especially theregion marked A in sketch, Fig. 2. At this part of the sail alittle bagging is caused by topping up the peak, and if thesail is not drawing properly it is first made manifest by a ten-dency to flap here. If this is noticed, the sail is out too far,and you should haul it in until this disappears. Whengoing about on the command Hard-a-lee of the steers-man, trim the sheet in with a steady pull until the boomis nearly amidships as the boat is rounding up, so as to keepthe sail full as long as possible, and then pay the rope outsmoothly until the sail is trimmed properly for the alteredcourse of the boat. There are two reasons for trimming the sheet in whengoing about—first, it keeps the sail full for a longer time,and in that way sends the boat about quicker and withbut little loss of headway; and, secondly, should the boom 140
