Just as Canadian National Railways had done in 1918, several French railway companies nationalized and merged to form the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF) in 1938. The Chemin de Fer de l’Ouest was among them. Founded in 1851, it acquired “Bourbonnais”-type locomotives, including this one built in 1883. Used for the transportation of freight in the Britanny and Normandy regions, it ended its career at the Chateaubriand depot (1962–1964). In 1908, this locomotive—originally registered under “2225 Ouest”—became the “État 030-841” then the “030-C-841” in 1938. The “C” indicated that the vehicle had been built before the French State Corporation was founded.
During its career, as was common practice during the steam era, this locomotive underwent several modifications. For example, a semi-enclosed cab was added in 1922. The original dual-axle tender was replaced in 1956 by a triple-axle model originaly from a 4501-4530 series Italian locomotive the Chemin de Fer de l’Ouest, which construction was subcontracted in 1908 to German builder Henschel und Söhn.
This locomotive was removed from service and donated to the Museum in 1965.
