The Negress portrays a woman who is the personification of the continent of Africa. Carpeaux wanted to use her to emphasize the horrors of slavery, creating the piece 3 years after the Civil War of the United States had ended and twenty years after slavery was banned in all French and Danish colonies. The bust was developed as part of Carpeaux's monumental group Quatre Parties du Monde (Four Parts of the World), commissioned by the city of Paris in 1867 as the crowning element of the architect Davioud's Fontaine de l'Observatoire.
