English: Julien Azario's imprisonment record from the Montluc prison in Lyon 1944.
  • Julien Pierre Azario (1890–1972), nicknamed the "Caïd," was a high-ranking police official in Lyon, France known for his harsh treatment of the North African population during the interwar period. He established strict control over employment and aid for North Africans in the region, deporting those with dissenting political views.
However, during World War II, Azario secretly assisted in rescuing Jews in the Rhône region, providing them with false papers and warning them of investigations. For this, he was arrested and imprisoned but later released.
After the war, Azario faced complaints about his methods but continued working, including during the Algerian War. He was posthumously awarded the title of "Righteous Among the Nations" in 1993 for his efforts to save Jews during the Holocaust, despite his controversial actions towards the North African community.
  • The Montluc Prison was an internment camp in Lyon that was used as a torture and killing site by the Gestapo during the Nazi occupation of France.
Azario's imprisonment was ordered by the Vichy authorities and their Nazi collaborators. The record described him as a communist and stated that he was destined for deportation to Germany.
