Adalaj is a small village off the highway from Udaipur to Ahmedabad. You can easily miss it while driving towards the capital of Gujarat. It will be a pity if you miss it, For Adalaj village has a hidden treasure in it. The treasure is a step well, locally called Vav. An elaborately carved, five stories deep well with rest places for the weary at all floors, this is certainly among the most beautiful specimen of local architecture.
The legend behind this well is no less interesting. It is said that the Vaghela King Veer Sinh was defeated and killed by Sultan Beghara in the fifteenth Century. He then asked for the hand of Veer Sinh's widow in marriage. The crafty widow, Queen Rudabai, was obviously not interested. She asked for time to complete a step well she wanted to build in her departed husband's memory before she married the Sultan. After waiting for 20 years for the queen to complete the well, an eager Sultan reiterated his demand. The Queen jumped into the well and committed Jauhar rather than marry the invader.
