fter a village of huts built upon the ruins occupied thesite of the city; then the idolatrous Emperor Hadrianrebuilt the city, laying out the streets to suit his paganideas, and for two centuries it was a pagan city whosepeople were devoted to the worship of strange gods andregarded not the sacred places. Three hundred yearsafter the Ascension of our Savior, the blessed St.Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, made apilgrimage from Constantinople to Jerusalem. Inspiredwith holy zeal, she gave orders for the erection ofchurches on the sites of the Nativity at Bethlehem andthe Ascension at Olivet. The findingof a part of the true Via Dolorosa in the excavationwithin our enclosure has been a blessing to the convent. The Abbess deserved and received more than spokenthanks for her courtesy. We realized then the truthof her last words. During our walk we visited an old Armenian church,which was gaudily decorated with red brocade hangingsand very antiquated paintings quaintly representingscenes from Bible history. In the court-yard of thechurch a young Armenian kindly offered us a pitcherof water, which he said had been brought from a springoutside the city for the use of the monks in the adjoiningconvent. We received it most gratefully, for the drink-ing water of Jerusalem is noted for impurity, and, aswe had been cautioned against it, we had abstainedfrom drinking water for three days.
