Description

Blazon

A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of a vertical blue turret bearing a five-pointed white star and supported on either side by five diagonal bars alternately of red and white, all on a gold background and within an oval border formed by two green palm branches issuing from either side of a gold semicircular scroll in base bearing the motto “WE PROUDLY SUPPORT” in red letters.

Symbolism

The five stripes of red and white and the blue with a single star are reminiscent of the flag of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico where Fort Buchanan, the unit’s headquarters site, is located.  The landmark Spanish fortress El Morro which stands at the entrance to San Juan harbor, not far from Fort Buchanan, is suggested by the blue turret at center with the position of the bars at either side indicating the basic mission of support.  The arched palm branches are symbolic of accomplishment, emphasizing the words of the unit’s motto “WE PROUDLY SUPPORT.”

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 12 March 1971.
