Example of Shamate fashion

Hello!

I would like to edit Shamate to include File:Smart_kids-011.jpg. If possible, add it in with the caption "Example of Shamate fashion" translated to French.

Merci beaucoup, QuickQuokka (discuter) 25 janvier 2025 à 18:18 (CET)Répondre

Hi
As you know how to edit, why don't you do it yourself?
The caption would be « Example de mode Shamate ».
Trizek bla 25 janvier 2025 à 19:20 (CET)Répondre
@Trizek: Well, I do know how to edit and add the picture, but I do not speak French, so I wanted an actual French person to do the translation, because I frankly do not trust Google Translate or other machine translation. Thanks for your help! QuickQuokka (discuter) 26 janvier 2025 à 07:12 (CET)Répondre
@QuickQuokka you should try DeeepL, pretty efficient. RawWriter (discuter) 22 mai 2025 à 13:11 (CEST)Répondre

Incidental exposure of woman’s nipples in article where it is not relevant

modifier

Woman holding a sea urchin in her hand and looking down at it, while topless. This image also incidentally includes her nipples.

(I posted a similar question at sv:Wikipedia:Bybrunnen#Incidental exposure of woman’s nipples in article where it is not relevant.)

This image is included in the article Arbacia lixula, captioned as:

Cet oursin n'est pas dangereux, et peut être manipulé sans risque avec quelques précautions.

Thus her nipples are not relevant, but showing her whole body for context might be useful.

Some users object to even incidental inclusion of such body parts. Wikimedia projects are not censored, by policy, but should not use that as an excuse to include gratuitious nudity. So do you think it would be useful to have a modified version of this image, with the nipples obscured, or does pandering to such concerns send the wrong message? Brianjd (discuter) 28 janvier 2025 à 06:05 (CET)Répondre

Hello Brianjd. I see that you've already received answers on the Swedish Wikipedia.
We have a guideline for offensive content, but I'm not sure that this photo is concerned: you see female nipples everywhere in the encyclopaedia, on history pages, mythology pages, and so on. Here, the image does not highlight these elements, nor is it lascivious. It's simply a woman on vacation, at the beach. Lazulis (discuter) 28 janvier 2025 à 09:13 (CET)Répondre
Hi
I agree with what @Lazulis said regarding offensive contents, and we wouldn't censor nudity. I would strongly oppose anyone wanting to remove images of nudity where it is relevant.
However, we also have guidelines regarding the usage of images. And in this specific case, the article is about the sea urchin. Consequently, the image could focus on the urchin. As a consequence, I don't think anyone would oppose a change of the initial image by this cropped image.
This comment is not an authorization for @Brianjd to start their nipple crusade on other articles, or nitpicking about the current case. I note that you start complaining about the crop, being the only one noticing a tiny bit of a nipple remaining visible. This kind of behavior would not not be accepted here. Breath, and move on, please.
Trizek bla 28 janvier 2025 à 15:20 (CET)Répondre
‘Nipple crusade’? That’s absurd. If I was on such a crusade, I could start plenty of arguments on projects in my own language.
I’m not on such a crusade. I confine my comments to this specific case, of real-life (not artistic) nipples in an article where they are not relevant. Brianjd (discuter) 28 janvier 2025 à 15:51 (CET)Répondre
(Sorry for writing in English. Of course you may answer me in French, but please ping me then)
I wanted to know who @Brianjd is, when he asks like this on both languages. Sorry Brian, but I am totaly against the moralism, and I wrote that on svwp too, therefor I wanted to learn more about you. (I also copy and paste this to svwp).
We all asume he is a moralist, but by looking at his edits on Commons you see he is a very active user. He writes very neutral, see here, about a whale tail picture. Also, here, asking about cathegories where he explicite says a topless sun bathing woman is not erotic. There are of course more examples, but that is not needed.
What I understand after this analysis is that Brian is not on a "nipple crusade" or moralism crusade, but actually was curious how the only two language versions think about this picture, and why. It is a little bit interesting that it just happens to be French and Swedish versions (both known for their openness about the body). I don't know how the picture was added to the french article, but the Swedish was added by the Lsjbot. So it seems to be a genuine question out of pure curiosity, and I respect that and apologizes to Brianjd for my "low aggressive" answer in the beginning on svwp. While I'm not opposing the change of the image, I found this response unconstructive, which made me think (wrongly?) that this was another one of those tedious crusades. Sorry about that, Brianjd. Trizek bla 30 janvier 2025 à 10:04 (CET)Répondre
@Trizek I posted an explanation there. Brianjd (discuter) 30 janvier 2025 à 11:04 (CET)Répondre

Change content language of the Chinese version of Lettre ouverte : non à l'intimidation des contributeurs bénévoles into Chinese

modifier

The Chinese Wikipedia uses LanguageConverter to convert between Simplified and Traditional Chinese. It allows the content to be written in a mixture of both variants, and have them properly converted for all Chinese readers, ensuring content consistency and ease of maintenance. Therefore, I propose to change the content language of Chinese version of Lettre ouverte : non à l'intimidation des contributeurs bénévoles into Chinese to enable this feature. This would allow Simplified Chinese readers to understand the letter easily (not every Simplified readers can understand Traditional Chinese). User:1F616EMO (Retrouvez-moi sur Wikipédia chinois) 1 mars 2025 à 00:54 (CET)Répondre

Hello 1F616EMO.
I used zh:DeepL翻譯 to try to translate it, the result is on Wikipédia:Lettre ouverte : non à l'intimidation des contributeurs bénévoles/zh-Hans.
I renamed the other page Wikipédia:Lettre ouverte : non à l'intimidation des contributeurs bénévoles/zh-Hant and added links to both in the main page in French.
Please check my translation and make any necessary changes, I checked it the best that I could, but I cannot be sure everything is accurate (especially for the translation of proper names and typography).

IBM System/23 Datamaster article, I seek collaborators

Hello, sorry for writing in English. I would like to assist in the creation of the article for this computer, but I don't know French. I can provide resources and knowledge. My idea would be to import the Catalan article and translate it to French. Please, could anybody help? Thank you in advance. Buran Biggest Fan (discuter) 20 avril 2025 à 12:25 (CEST)Répondre

Hello
This is the place where to speak English, no apologies needed! :D
My best advice would be to use Spécial:ContentTranslation, as the ca <-> fr machine translation works pretty well. You would then publish it as a draft (under Utilisateur:Buran Biggest Fan/Brouillon) so that someone would review it.
Trizek bla 20 avril 2025 à 15:44 (CEST)Répondre
I am experiencing some problems. The content translation page doesn't seem to work, the paragraphs are just copied instead of being in French. That or I am doing something very wrong. Buran Biggest Fan (discuter) 20 avril 2025 à 16:07 (CEST)Répondre
Okay. I have gone through the translation, but only a small portion of it has been translated and the rest seems to have been discarded. Sorry for being a noob. Buran Biggest Fan (discuter) 20 avril 2025 à 16:42 (CEST)Répondre
No worries, we all experienced that learning curve.
At Spécial:ContentTranslation, when you create a new translation, you see three columns:
  1. on the left is the source
  2. the middle one shows your work
  3. on the right are several options -- here you can find the translation options, which may be set to "use the original text". Try using a translation engine.
I'll delete your sandbox so that you can start over.

Help with French article

modifier

Hello French Wikipedia and thank you for your English language forum. I am working on translating an article, using my very poor French and a digital translator into French Wikipedia code. The article is the English language article "New Albion" which is highly rated. I have progressed well only to find myself at a point where it is close to completion with problems I am unable to fix. If someone on French Wikipedia would like to assist me with the article, I would be very grateful. You can find it at the end of my sandbox: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Hu_Nhu/sandbox&action=edit&section=17. Please excuse my errors in this post. I look forward to hearing from you.Hu Nhu18 mai 2025 à 02:16 (CEST)Répondre

Hello @Hu Nhu, a few things that you can easily do. In the text formatting of the french Wikipédia, the references are placed before the final end point of a sentence not after. Among other things, your text is currently worded in the past, in frWP, we write in the "Présent de l'indicatif" (in present simple) as if the action is ongoing. For the various sources, "Cite book" model should be translated in the french "Modèle:ouvrage", The "Cite web" model equivalent here is the Modèle:Lien web. in order to avoid the various errors displayed in you sandbox, you need to write your draft in a subpage of your french user page. regards GF38storic (discuter) 18 mai 2025 à 11:13 (CEST)Répondre
Hello Hu Nhu. Writing an article in a language you aren't fluent in is risky; at first glance, your text needs major proofreading; maybe ask for help in the WP:Atelier de relecture. Some wikilinks could be added too.
To expand on what GF38storic said, the lead section must be in the present tense (see WP:Résumé introductif) and French typography is different from its English counterpart (see WP:Conventions typographiques). References will be converted by a bot, all you have to do is 1) make sure their language parameter is defined and 2) translate the dates in French. Cheers — Vega (discuter) 18 mai 2025 à 15:45 (CEST)Répondre
Hi, I second the fact that "writing an article in a language you aren't fluent in is risky". For instance, your current draft uses past tense while it should use present, in a narrative form. I'm afraid that a digital translator may not grasp that subtility. Trizek bla 19 mai 2025 à 14:51 (CEST)Répondre
Hi Trizek, this is actually a misconception, our articles can use the past tense, after the lead section (see Wikipédia:Style encyclopédique#Impersonnel). A bit of "imparfait du subjonctif" here and there makes for some diversity ;-) — Vega (discuter) 19 mai 2025 à 15:28 (CEST)Répondre
True!
« Un article utilise généralement le présent de vérité générale dans le résumé introductif, ainsi que le présent historique (présent de narration) pour mettre en évidence un épisode particulier de la narration en alternance avec d'autres temps : passé composé ou simple, imparfait, plus-que-parfait et futur historique. »
I'm saying it as Hu Nhu's draft only uses past tense, with no alternance, a frequent issue with machine translation. Trizek bla 19 mai 2025 à 18:18 (CEST)Répondre
Thank you everyone. I deeply appreciate your attention to this. I will do what I can to the article and keep it in my sandbox for now. The article is from the English Wikipedia page New Albion and it highly rated. I believe I will require the assistance of a native or fluent French language speaker, and if any might know of someone who would be interested in such assisting, please let me know. MOst kind regards. Hu Nhu (discuter) 22 mai 2025 à 03:14 (CEST)Répondre
Not MOst kind looks. I intended, Most kind regards. Hu Nhu (discuter) 22 mai 2025 à 03:15 (CEST)Répondre

I think you should consider copying it to your French Wikipedia sandbox, as it will be easier to find someone to help you locally. Plus, it will show you if the templates are okay. Trizek bla 22 mai 2025 à 12:04 (CEST)Répondre
