Samuel Adler est un compositeur et chef d'orchestre américain, né allemand, le à Mannheim. Au cours d'une carrière professionnelle de plus de six décennies, il a été membre du corps professoral de l'École de musique Eastman - Université de Rochester et de Juilliard School. En outre, il est crédité de fonder et de diriger l'Orchestre symphonique de la septième armée qui a participé aux initiatives diplomatie culturelle des États-Unis en Allemagne et dans toute l'Europe après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le vaste catalogue musical d'Adler comprend plus de 400 compositions publiées. Il a reçu plusieurs récompenses, dont l'ordre du Mérite de la République fédérale d'Allemagne[1].

Biographie modifier

Il part pour les États-Unis en 1939 et étudie à l'Université de Boston de 1943 à 1947. Puis, il rejoint l'Université Harvard de 1948 à 1950 où il étudie avec Aaron Copland, Paul Hindemith, Paul Pisk, Walter Piston, et Randall Thompson et obtient un M.A. en 1950. Il étudie la direction d'orchestre avec Serge Koussevitzky à Tanglewood en 1949. Pendant son service dans l'Armée de terre des États-Unis (1950–1952), Adler fonde et dirige l'Orchestre symphonique de la septième armée.En 1953, Adler a reçu la Citation d'excellence de l'Armée des États-Unis pour avoir fondé l'orchestre et organisé ses concerts en soutien à la diplomatie culturelle après la Seconde Guerre mondiale[2],[3],[4],[5],[6],[7],[8],[9],[10],[11].

 
Eastman School of Music- University of Rochester

Il enseigne à l'université du Nord du Texas entre 1958 et 1966. Pendant près de trois décennies, Adler fut professeur de composition à l'École de musique Eastman de l'université de Rochester (1966-1995). En 1997, il est devenu membre de la faculté de la Juilliard School et a reçu la Chaire William Shuman Scholars en 2009[12],[13],[14],[15].

Adler est l'auteur de trois livres : Choral Conducting (Holt Rinehart et Winston 1971, deuxième édition Schirmer Books 1985), Sight Singing (W.W. Norton 1979, 1997), et The Study of Orchestration (W.W. Norton 1982, 1989, 2001 ; Édition italienne édité par Lorenzo Ferrero pour EDT Srl Torino, 2008)[16]. Il a également contribué à de nombreux articles dans de grands magazines, livres et encyclopédies publiés aux États-Unis et à l’étranger. Adler a également réfléchi sur six décennies d'enseignement dans ses mémoires Building Bridges with Music : Stories from a Composer's Life (Pendragon Press, 2017)[17],[18].

Au fil des décennies, Adler a reçu de nombreux prix, parmi lesquels : « ASCAP Aaron Copland Award for Lifetime Achievement in Music », « Prix Deems Taylor », « Bourse Guggenheim », « Prix Charles Ives »[19],[20],[15],[21]. Il a également été nommé au Panthéon de la musique classique américaine (2008)[22].

Au fil des décennies, l'héritage musical d'Adler a été interprété par plusieurs ensembles orchestraux, notamment : Symphonie de chambre de Cleveland, Quatuor d'Esterhazy, Orchestre symphonique national de Lettonie, Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt et le Bowling Green Philharmonia. Les performances de ses compositions ont été enregistrées sur plusieurs labels dont Albany Records, Linn Records, Navona Records et Naxos Records[23].

Samuel Adler est marié à Emily Freeman Brown qui est directrice musicale et chef d'orchestre du Bowling Green Philharmonia[24],[25],[26],[27],[28].

Style de compositions modifier

Les musicologues ont noté que les travaux d'Adler incorporent un large éventail de techniques de composition, y compris l'atonalité libre, le diatonicisme et le sérialisme. En outre, il est reconnu pour ses rythmes de danse, ses thèmes folkloriques, ses ostinati et ses dispositifs associés à la musique aléatoire[29].

Œuvres modifier

Samuel Adler composa après ses études. Son rythme et les accords sont très rapides et vifs, ou lents et mélodieux.

Il compose 6 symphonies et 8 quatuors à cordes. Il a entre autres composé une sonate en quatre mouvements pour cor et piano et deux pièces pour clavecin (Sonate pour clavecin, 1982 ; Bridges to Span Adversity, 1989)[30],[31],[32].
