Major Lazer est un groupe jamaïcain-américain de musique électronique, formé à Miami en 2008. Il est composé du DJ et producteur Diplo et du DJ, producteur et rappeur Walshy Fire.

Le groupe collabore régulièrement avec des chanteurs pour ses chansons.

En 2015, la chanson Lean On est un grand succès. En 2016, leur chanson Cold Water en compagnie de Justin Bieber et de MØ a atteint la première place de l'UK Singles Chart et du Canadian Hot 100, ainsi que la deuxième place du Billboard Hot 100.

Biographie modifier

Major Lazer est au départ le fruit d'une collaboration entre Diplo et le DJ-producteur Switch. Leur premier album, sorti en 2009, s'intitule Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do et mélange rap, electro, dancehall, jungle et reggae. De nombreux artistes américains et jamaïcains y ont collaboré : Mr Lexx, Santigold, Ms. Thing, Mr. Vegas, Jovi Rockwell, Trouble Andrew, Turbulence, Jah Dan, Mr Evil, Mapei, T.O.K, Amanda Blank, Stein, Nina Sky, Ricky Blaze, Vybz Kartel, Nebat Drums, Prince Zimboo, Leftside et Supahype, Bruno Mars, Toots and the Maytals[1].

Le groupe s'est fait connaître par le titre Hold The Line, rapidement suivi de Pon de Floor (en) en collaboration avec Afrojack, Nebat Drums. Un EP de 5 titres baptisé Lazers Never Die est sorti en 2010. Il regroupe des remixes du premier album par K.L.A.M., Azealia Banks alors connu sous le pseudonyme Miss Bank$, Thom Yorke, Collie Buddz, Lindi Ortega, ainsi que la rappeuse M.I.A. et le DJ Buraka Som Sistema, tous deux produits par Switch et Diplo sur le label de celui-ci, Mad Decent.

Major Lazer a également sorti un mixtape en collaboration avec le duo anglais La Roux, intitulé Lazerproof[source secondaire souhaitée].

En 2011, la chanteuse américaine Beyoncé sample le morceau Pon De Floor sur Run the World (Girls)[2]. Le titre est produit par Diplo mais ne sera pas crédité. La même année, Switch quitte le projet. Diplo engage alors les DJs Jillionaire et Walshy Fire (de Black Chiney) pour l'aider avec la production et les représentations.

En , Snoop Dogg sort le titre La La La produit par Diplo. Le titre reggae annonce le prochain album de Snoop, Reincarnated.

En , sortent les titres de Snoop Lion Here Comes The King et Lighters Up produit par Major Lazer. En , Major Lazer avec Ezra Koenig de Vampire Weekend sortent la chanson Jessica. La partie instrumentale de cette chanson est inspirée du titre Satisfaction de Carl Dawkins, un des artistes légendaires de la scène reggae jamaïcaine. Major Lazer n'en fait mention officielle que très rapidement sur sa chaîne Youtube.

En 2013, le groupe sort l'album Free the Universe, porté notamment par le single Watch Out For This.

Le , le groupe sort un nouvel EP, Apocalypse Soon, composé de 5 titres (des collaborations avec des artistes tels que Pharrell Williams ou encore Sean Paul). Le titre phare reste Come On To Me en featuring avec Sean Paul qui se classe en France, en Belgique et aux Pays-Bas. L'EP se classe en France, en Nouvelle-Zélande et entre même dans le top Billboard 200 aux États-Unis (137e).

En , Major Lazer participe à la bande originale du film Hunger Games : La Révolte, partie 1 en produisant All My Love, en featuring avec Ariana Grande.

Début 2015, Major Lazer, en collaboration avec DJ Snake, sort Lean On, chantée par MØ, qui deviendra leur plus grand succès. La chanson se classe quinzième sur la liste des vidéos les plus vues sur YouTube, dépassant le milliard de vues le . L'album Peace Is the Mission sortie en avant d'être réédité avec cinq titres supplémentaires en novembre.

Le , Major Lazer et Bad Royale ont sorti My Number, une chanson qui échantillonne 54-46 That's My Number que Pitchfork décrit comme « un classique du genre du légendaire groupe ska/reggae Toots and the Maytals »[1]. Cette nouvelle version de la chanson contient des voix nouvellement enregistrées du leader Toots Hibbert, elle a été spécialement conçue pour Major Lazer, en changeant les paroles originales pour intégrer le groupe dans la chanson tout en conservant la mélodie originale[3].

Le , le DJ et producteur Jillionaire annonce son départ du groupe. Il est remplacé par Ape Drums, déjà collaborateur de longue date du groupe. Mai 2021, Jillionaire sort un titre et clip en ft. avec Oryane & Mical Teja avec Ándale avec la participation du groupe Les Twins dans le clip.

Le groupe sort en 2020 l'album music is weapon avec des collaborations avec : Sia, labrinth, swae Lee et tant d'autres, album dont la réédition sortira en 2021 avec une collaboration avec la chanteuse française Aya Nakamura et publient le titre : C'est cuit, accompagné d'un clip sorti sur Youtube[4].

Pour la première fois de leur carrière le 15 juillet 2022, le groupe clôture le premier jour sur la scène principale du festival belge tomorrowland, connu pour être l’un des plus grands festivals de musique électronique.
