L'État américain de l'Arkansas est divisé en 500 municipalités.

Statut et création modifier

Les municipalités de l'Arkansas sont divisées en trois catégories[1] :

  • les first-class cities à partir de 2 500 habitants ;
  • les second-class cities entre 500 et 2 499 habitants ;
  • les towns en dessous de 500 habitants.

Des exceptions à ces catégories sont prévues par la loi. Si aucune population minimale n'est requise pour créer une municipalité, seules les villes de première classe peuvent adopter une charte « Home Rule »[1].

L'ensemble des municipalités sont incluses au sein d'un township. Cinq municipalités coïncident avec un township : Elkins, Farmington, Fayetteville, Lincoln et Tollette[2]. Les townships n'ont cependant pas de gouvernement propre[1].
