Pendant la campagne électorale modifier

Au cours de la campagne le PLC, initialement talonné par le NPD et largement dépassé par les conservateurs, effectue une spectaculaire remontée et atteint la première place au début novembre, dépassant fréquemment les 40 % d'intentions de vote dans les enquêtes d'opinion.

Dans les derniers jours de la campagne le PC parvient à se détacher de ses concurrents et obtient un second gouvernement majoritaire consécutif avec 43 % des votes soit une perte de 7 points par rapport à 1984.

Pendant la 33e législature du Canada modifier

Le Parti progressiste-conservateur, initialement très populaire, perd une part considérable de ses appuis dès la mi-1985, au profit - principalement - du Parti libéral et dans une moindre mesure du NPD.

En 1986, le PLC reprend la tête des intentions de vote dès le début de l'année et le PC passe en deuxième position, devant le NPD. Ce dernier connait une dynamique positive au début de 1987 et dépasse successivement le PC (dès le début de l'année) puis le PLC (à l'été) pour être le parti recevant le plus d'intentions de votes à l'automne 1987 (avec près de 40 % de support jusqu'en octobre). Le PLC reprend la tête à la toute fin de 1987 alors que le PC est relégué durant toute cette période à la troisième place.

Après la ratification de l'Accord de libre-échange canado-américain, le PC effectue une remontée progressive dans les intentions de vote tout au long de 1988 et talonne le PLC à l'automne lorsque les élections sont déclenchées.
