  • Scope and content: United Kingdom. Consett, England. Night and day, seven days and seven nights a week, whirling smoke cloud rise from the huge Consett Steel plant, on the outskirts of Consett, County Durham. To meet continually increasing demand, 5,500 employess work 3 shifts to deep the plant busy 24 hours a day. Marshall Plan funds will pay for $583,000 worth of engineering services, drawing and fees for patents, from American firms, all helping to modernize the plant and increase its output. Since 1945, the British company has itself modernized its coke ovens and blast furnancees, and is now concentrating on modernization of the rolling equipment. The Marshall Plan contribution, which provides for the construction of a billet mill, slabbing mill, pug mill and blast furnaces, amounts to 10% of the total steel is supplied to shipbuilding. At present 12,000 ingots are produced every week, in addition to 10,000 tons of pig iron and 16,000 tons of coke
