In 1814, the confederateshaving passed the Rhine, penetrated, after various battles, to Paris, whichbeing surrendered by Marshals Marmont and Mortier, Napoleon concludedi treaty with the allies at Fontainebleau, by which he agreed to retire tothe island of Elba, with provision for himself and family.
