The fighting strength ofthe army, exclusive of Algiers and Tunis, was 490,000 men, with 42coast batteries, 47 fortress batteries, 14 mountain batteries, 15 horsebatteries, 619 field batteries, and 21 field howitzer batteries. Theaeronautical corjjs is organized in three territorial grou^is. Thereare 27 sections of 8 aeroplanes, 10 cavalry sections of 3 aeroplaneseach, and 11 fortress sections of 8 aeroplanes each, represent-ing a total of 334 aeroplanes. The military law of 1913 made the length of service three yearsin the active army; eleven years in the reserve; seven j^ears in theterritorial army; and seven years in the reserve of the territorialarmy.
