Last call for translation: VisualEditor News #1—2015 modifier

Hi! Apologies if you're reading this message more than once and if it doesn't come in your language. This is an invitation to join translators working on the February's issue of the VisualEditor multilingual newsletter. This time it features an important announcement about a series of meetings where VE tasks on Phabricator will be triaged live and publicly, starting next week. Since we want many people to be aware of this as soon as possible (volunteer developers are especially welcome!), we have a time constraint which means we'll deliver to the wikis on Thursday morning (PST) this week. Thanks a lot in advance, we know you'll do whatever it takes to keep your community up-to-date, and appreciate it a lot. --Elitre (WMF) (discuter) 4 février 2015 à 17:40 (CET)

PS: Here are some instructions. Please go to the translation page: your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once you've selected it, you'll see the document in English side by side with any translation work already done in your language. You can add new translations or modify existing ones. If you need further help or would like to receive a talk page message to be notified of future translations, please contact me directly.

Request for Gadget review modifier

Hi,

Greetings,

Wikimedia commons uses a gadget called AjaxQuickDelete:

  • Gadget descrption at wikimedia commons is as follows:
"Adds the Nominate for deletion and Discuss category link to the toolbox in the sidebar, Move & Replace (filemovers only), Process Duplicates (admins only) links to the appropriate places. This gadget is also used by other gadgets."
  • More info :
I wish and request French and German wikipedians adopt this gadget, if not atleast a peer review that the gadget is prima facia technically stable and safe to use.
Why so ?: Frankly I want to adopt this gadget at mr wikipedia, but before adopting a gadget locally we feel reassured if a gadget is used either at fr or de wikipedia (along with either ta/te/kn/ml wikipedia); since these wiki's wikipedians do have enough technical expertise to take care of safty concerns :).
Thanks and warm regards

J. Cassel modifier

Again, I would need your help, I'm looking for any detailed biographical data about a Belgian hockey player J. (van) Cassel, whose article is now up for deletion on huwiki. He was member of Brussels IHSC in 1911/2 and won a gold medal at the Championnat de Belgique de hockey sur glace with his team. There's little information about him on the world wide web, here and here, our goal is to get hold of more data, perhaps from printed sources which may provide any futher details about him (possible French/Belgian/Dutch sports almanachs or similar sources from the 1910s) and the whereabouts of these sources if they're available scanned somewhere online. Thank you in advance. Gyurika (discuter) 6 mai 2015 à 16:25 (CEST)

Gyurkia : hello, I searched there, (this is the main source of French press archive, sport press titles inclued), but I am sorry I found absolutely nothing... I did not even find the original version of the copy of the main source of the article on hu.wp (and if it is from the Belgian press I don't know where I can found it online). The other hockey players of the team he played with are sometimes mentionned as belgian aristocrats in French press (hunting parties and richmen stuff...) I hope you will find something. Kumʞum Tu veux un cachou ? 6 mai 2015 à 22:01 (CEST)
Thanks. Do you aware of any other sources which may contain such old sports data? Or is this gallica.bnf.fr the only one, which merges everything in one place? Offline stuff is also okay. Gyurika (discuter) 7 mai 2015 à 17:50 (CEST)
Hi, I asked there (I will answer you in English here if they bring interesting infos). Gallica is the main source of numerized free French press archives, old books, maps and pictures of the National library of France. The old sport press newspapers are there. To search you can go there, then select English on the top of the page. Kumʞum Tu veux un cachou ? 7 mai 2015 à 19:08 (CEST)
Hi, Hockey Archives (passionhockey.com) is a reliable source (his founder, Marc Branchu, has written a book, Histoire du hockey sur glace en France (History of ice hockey in France), which is used as a source on many articles on fr.wp). --Mathis B discuter, le 7 mai 2015 à 20:33 (CEST)

An invitation to Edit filter managers of wikimedia wiki projects modifier

Hi,

This is an invitation to Edit filter managers and patrollers who refer to edit filters from your wiki project to share and know about effective public filters from various wikimedia wiki projects.

It is almost six years since March 2009, that Edit filters are in use on various Wikimedia wiki projects. At meta we have started a platform page m:Edit filters benefiting to various local Wikiprojects to know good and effective (public) edit filters by sharing of relevant information with rest of wikimedia community. This will help editfilter managers, and there by concerned projects, to benefit from maximising potential of best possible (public) edit filters.

We are keen to have your participation in this collaborative and constructive endeavour and the discussions to kno and learn from each other's knowledge and experiences.

Hello! I noticed that you have 2 articles from the same person: Jehan d'Authon and Jean d’Auton. While merging their Wikidata-items, I disconnected the second from WD. Please merge the articles and correct in Wikidata if required. Thanks, --Tacsipacsi (discuter) 6 juin 2015 à 19:32 (CEST)

A request has been made to Wikipédia:Pages_à_fusionner. Regards, Comte0 (discuter) 6 juin 2015 à 22:17 (CEST)

Population and Wikidata modifier

Hello!
We would like to use Your data about population of French communities in our Wikipedia (pl). Your data is extensive and bona fide, so opportunity to use them would definitely help in development of our Wiki. We'd like to use them in an ednless currency mode, what could be possible by sharing them through Wikidata. Their exposition would also enable their usage on other Wikipedias.

Hello, all and any info on WP:fr is published subject to CC-by-sa license. Thus you are entitled to re-use it without even asking for, provided you do it according to the requirements of the license ie, mainly, naming the source. Hope thos help. Best regards, cordialement, et Hop ! Kikuyu3 Sous l'Arbre à palabres 17 juillet 2015 à 22:52 (CEST)
Actually the CC-BY-SA licence is not compatible with the CC-0 license on Wikidata but it doesn’t matter since population data is not really subject to copyright (just numbers). But I think Mati7 is asking how to retreive the data from frwiki to wikidata, maybe with a bot? Try to ask on d:Wikidata talk:WikiProject France or d:Wikidata:Bot requests. Kind regards, — Thibaut にゃんぱすー 17 juillet 2015 à 23:34 (CEST)
@Thibaut Ok, thank You. Mati7 (discuter) 20 juillet 2015 à 13:07 (CEST)

Wiki labels & Revision Scoring as a Service for French Wikipedia modifier

Hello French Wikipedia,

I apologize for my complete lack of French skills. I would most welcome if my post is translated to French.

So computers are very good at crunching numbers. Your average calculator can out smart you in arithmetic. However computers are terrible at pretty much in everything else. Programming computers to under take any task no matter how simple beyond computing tends to be very difficult. This is where Artificial Intelligence comes in. With Artificial Intelligence we teach computers how to solve problems without explicit programming for the solution. This is what we are doing.

We are working on a project called m:Research:Revision scoring as a service which aims to provide quality control Artificial Intelligence infrastructure for Mediawiki and Wikimedia projects. We already have our system implemented and running on Azerbaijani, English, Persian, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish editions on Wikipedia. We are hoping to adapt our tool to serve French language as well as a number of other languages.

We are currently mainly focusing on vandalism detection where we provide an API (m:ORES) that provides scores. We have made an effort to keep our system robust.

The examples I'll provide are based on a machine learning algorithm that was trained to use 20,000 reverted edits. This is kind of modelling is problematic for two reasons. First is, there are non-vandalism related reasons for edits to be reverted such as mistakes from new users, this would develop such an unproductive bias. Second problem would be it lacks the ability to distinguish good faith users from malicious ones. To demonstrate our system I will give three examples from English wikipedia. I have picked these three semi-random.

  • Score of 90% diff en:Moncef Mezghanni
    • As visible in the diff, it is clearly something that shouldn't be welcome on English wikipedia. Algorithms confidence also matches my human assessment.
  • Score of 75% diff en:Monin
    • When I look at the diff it isn't immediately clear to me if this should be reverted. Detailed look reveals that prior version had more neutral information, but new version at a glance isn't exactly clear cut vandalism, albeit spammy. Algorithms confidence drops just as my human assessment.
  • Score of 19% diff en:Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back
    • As visible in the diff this edit clearly improves the article. The algorithms confidence plummets as well. Algorithm is more confident that this edit should NOT be reveted.

We are also working towards a system for article quality where we use existing assessment by en:Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Teamto train our system. We only have this system on English wikipedia at the moment but we would be more than happy to expand to other language editions. I am uncertain if French Wikipedia has a similar quality assessment scale. I have picked 5 random articles to demonstrate this.

Typical problem is that humans typically do not re-asses articles over time or articles are never assessed in the first place. Our system circumvents this problem by automating this.

We have already gathered some language features such as bad words and informal words. We already have a localization of en:Wikipedia:Labels serving as our local landing page: Wikipédia:Label. We have also started an edit quality campaign where we request the local community to hand code/label ~2000 revisions labeling them productive/damaging and good faith/bad faith. This would be similar to the campaign on English Wikipedia en:Wikipedia:Labels/Edit quality.

After this we will be able to generate scores for revisions that is usable by gadgets such as ScoredRevisions as well as (potentially) tools like huggle. If community desires it, it can even be used to create a local vandalism reversion bot.

So in a nutshell our algorithm relies on community input to support the community. Feel free to ask any questions. Either here, on meta or on IRC on the freenode server and #wikimedia-ai channel where we hang out. You can also reach us at https://github.com/wiki-ai

Hello   とある白い猫 : for your information, French wikipedia has a counter vandalism bot, Salebot (d · c · b), owned by Gribeco (d · c · b). He is using a scordcard Utilisateur:Salebot/Config, based on en:User:ClueBot/Source#Score list. So, probably the best way should be to discuss with Gribeco about your new algorithm. You can see also with the RC patrol (Wikipédia:Patrouille RC) what they can except (I informed them about your message). --Sisyph 19 août 2015 à 10:51 (CEST)
Hi, we provide scores to the general communities consumption (including tool/bot developers and users). We need help from the general community to help identify what damaging/productive edits look like and what good faith/bad faith edits look like. We have the wiki labels campaign for this. -- とある白い猫 chi? 28 août 2015 à 22:27 (CEST)
とある白い猫 : I would like to work on that project. I usually contribute on the French Wikipedia and understand English. Here, I am sysop and I translated many articles of the English Wikipedia. So, what is the next step ? — Cantons-de-l'Est discuter 19 septembre 2015 à 19:42 (CEST)
One last thing, one thing we do is we auto label revisions we think are likely good these include revisions that are not reverted in a while and revisions that were made by users with higher access (such as sysop). What user groups aside from sysop are "trusted" on this wiki? User groups I see are: abusefilter, accountcreator, afttest, afttest-hide, bot, bureaucrat, checkuser, confirmed, flow-bot, ipblock-exempt, oversight, sysop. -- とある白い猫 chi? 23 octobre 2015 à 00:26 (CEST)
