An inflatable sailboat is a type of boat with an inflatable hull and propelled by a Sail. The main appeal of these boats is to be foldable and easily transportable.

The inflatable boat with a motor has become common, such as the semi-rigid boat, but the evolution of the inflatable sailboat has been slower. Up to this day, inflatable catamarans mostly have been developed and marketed with some success.

History

The first famous inflatable boat in water sports history is L'Hérétique, with which Alain Bombard crossed the Atlantic in 1952. L'Hérétique was a Zodiac inflatable boat on which a sail had been mounted.

Several manufacturers then introduced inflatable dinghies with a sail on the market. The Tinker Tramp and Tinker Traveller series was designed in England by Fred Benyon-Tinker beginning in 1978. Production ceased in 2010.

Among the latest classic models, we mention the DinghyGo, the Sailabout by JBoat Company (Australia) and the kit models, such as the Intex Mariner, by Sailboatstogo. These inflatable dinghies are made up of inflatable tubes and a relatively flat hull. Their behavior in navigation is very different from that of a conventional hard-hull dinghy.

Commercially launched in December 2012, the Tiwal started a noteworthy revolution in the world of inflatable dinghies. Its high pressure inflatable hull made of a double-walled textile combined with an aluminum tubular structure allows for a rigid hull. Its inflatable hull is made of the same material as the inflatable Stand Up Paddle. With its rigid V-shaped hull, the Tiwal enables a quality of navigation similar to that with a hard-hull dinghy. It received the "Best Innovation" award at the "Boat of the Year 2014" contest organized by Sailing World, the American sport-sailing magazine. The Tiwal was created in France by designer Marion EXCOFFON.

Inflatable Catamarans

History

modifier

The first inflatable catamaran was invented in 1960 by Eduard Heuzonter. He designed and developed the Semperit Kat models in the 1980s. His company was taken over by Grabner who continued the development of inflatable catamarans.

Les catamarans pneumatiques sont aujourd'hui nombreux sur le marché et bénéficient de perfectionnements réguliers.

Today, there are many inflatable catamarans on the market and they are regularly enhanced. Among the different models on the market today, can be noted:

The performance of some of these models is interesting. The rigidity of their structures allows them to support substantial sails, up to 32.8 sq. feet (10 m²).
