Waitangi, in the Bay of Islands in the far north of the New Zealand was the setting for the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. This document formalised the arrangement between Maori and the British, and is still controversial today. This is the "wharenui" or meeting house on the treaty grounds at Waitangi, a national meeting house representative of all tribes. It is usually open to visitors to the treaty grounds. Similar buildings stand on the marae (ceremonial/communal centres) of most Maori communities.
