English: The Stone Barge is a cast in situ concrete structure covered with local limestone blocks. Its main function is to work as an artificial barrier to mitigate the effect of sea waves that could reach the East Terrace, and the Villa itself. It is also a huge art complex designed as a Spanish galleon, and contains amazing stoneworks representing humanoid statues, marine mythological figures, obelisks, water fountains, and staircases. North American artist, Alexander Stirling Calder, was commissioned by James Deering to do the sculptures. The mythological sculptures were removed from their bases to be preserved and replaced by identical reproductions made using molding techniques. The Barge entertained James Deering’s guests, and was adorned with gardening and a pergola was built to accommodate visitors who could only arrive by boat.
