English: A silver tone-hole key from a woodwind instrument. Judging by the overall shape and proportions it is possibly from an early clarinet or oboe, conceivably not from a flute.
This particular design of keywork was current from the early part of the 18th century until about the 1820s when industrialisation superceded it. During that period, instrument making in Britain was mostly, but not exclusively, centred around Soho and Bloomsbury in London. Makers like Stanesby and Cahusac ran their own small workshops to make the bodies of the instruments and contracted out the keymaking. It is probably not possible to say for sure which instrument or which maker this component is from unless the rest of the instrument turns up.
