anyother. The seeds of the Sugar Maple ripen about the firstof October. Like those of other Maples, they are inpairs, united at the base, and furnished with a wing.Their external appearance is precisely similar; but,upon examination, I have uniformly found one ofeach pair abortive and worthless. The trees rareh-,if ever, produce seed two years in succession. Theseed may be sown in autumn, or mixed with sandand kept damp—never wet—through the winter in aplace cool enough to prevent vegetation. It shouldbe sown early in spring, in drills as directed for theSilver Maple. The young plants grow slowly for thefirst two or three years, and may remain two years inthe seed-bed. The Sugar Maple should never be planted on lowflat lands, with a retentive subsoil, unless it is under-drained. It will not live where the soil is saturatedwith water during the growing season. Poor sandy soils are notsuited to the growth of the Sugar Maple. It willthrive on almost any good tillage land, and flourisheson the banks of ravines and the sides of bluffs andhills. It certainly meritscultivation in its native country, both for its utilityand beauty.
